If you like Williamsburg and Jamestown then try
St. Mary's City!
St. Mary's City is the site of
Maryland's first capital (1634-1695) and
the fourth permanent settlement in British North America.
St. Mary's City is located in
Southern Maryland about one hour south of Waldorf. It has a
historic early British Village,
an Indian Hamlet, a
restored boat called the Dove, and a restored Tobacco
Plantation all manned by docents in period
costumes just like Williamsburg and
Jamestown.
Travel DC With Kids! just loved this place. There was so much to see and do.
In fact, we ran out of time to do it all, and plan on going back.
Not only do kids love this historic enclave, but it is a great
place to take visitors from outside our
area.
<We had lunch at an
outdoor cafe/picnic area in the
main village, the food was very good. Plan on spending a whole
day at St. Mary's City as there is much to see and do. You
will need to drive from the main village to the plantation and
possibly even to the Indian Hamlet if you do not want to take a
little hike on a dirt path.
Directions: Take 301 south from the outer loop of the Capital
Beltway (I-495). Pick up Route 5 in Waldorf and travel south. You
will see signs for Historic St. Mary's City on the way. The
phone number is 1-800-762-1634. Entrance fee for adults is $7.50
and children range from $3.50 to $5.50 each. The admission fee is
well spent, you will learn a lot and really have a great
time!
